Overview

The Solar Lantern was designed to bring durability and refinement to a market saturated with low-cost outdoor lighting products.
We were tasked with developing a lantern that could compete against cheap alternatives while offering significantly improved longevity and build quality. The goal was to create a product that could withstand harsh outdoor conditions while maintaining a strong visual presence.
The lantern was developed from initial concept through to manufacturing, including industrial design, material selection, and product development.

Approach

Product Research

We analysed the existing lantern market to understand common design patterns, material choices, and durability shortcomings. This research helped identify opportunities to create a lantern that felt more robust and refined while remaining commercially viable.

Product Design

The form was developed to balance durability with a clean, modern aesthetic. Proportions and details were refined to create a lantern that feels solid and premium while remaining practical for outdoor use.

Materials

A die-cast aluminium body was selected to provide structural strength and long-term durability. This approach improves weather resistance and product longevity compared to common plastic alternatives found in the category.
